I find that it is easiest to learn from examples of others when looking to understand a principle. Let’s look at the story of Abraham.
Abraham was promised that his seed would bless all the nations of the earth, and that they would be as the numbers of the stars. However, for the longest time he couldn’t have a child, his wife being barren. Finally, his wife Sarah bore Isaac. Abraham treasured his son Isaac, his only son from Sarah, a gift from a loving Lord.
However, the Lord told Abraham that he needed to offer his only son as a burnt offering/sacrifice. Think for a moment how difficult this must have been for him. I can’t even imagine what it would have been like. However, Abraham, because he trusted the Lord so much, knew that the Lord would never lead him astray. So he did it.
It appears that the Lord had no intention for Abraham to actually sacrifice his only son, he was only testing Abraham to see how much he trusted in the Lord. Abraham, though he loved and adored his son, knew the Lord would provide a way.
In doing this, Abraham tested his trust in the Lord, and it is not likely that the Lord will ask us to sacrifice our children to him for a burnt offering, he asks a willing heart and an open mind. If we give the Lord these things, we will find that our trust in the Lord grows even more, and like Abraham of old, we can have unshaken trust in the Lord.
